In the Beginning – The Early Signs of Memory Loss

There were times when our dad repeatedly asked, “Are you cold?” It was his way of showing love; little did we know this repetition was an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease. As the disease progressed, he asked so often my sisters and I joked about turning the question into a drinking game but we would have been perpetually tipsy.

Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia can manifest with various symptoms, and it's important to note that these symptoms may vary from person to person. However, here are five common signs and symptoms often associated with Alzheimer's and dementia:

1. Memory Loss: One of the most prominent early signs of Alzheimer's disease is memory loss that disrupts daily life. This may involve forgetting recently learned information, important dates, or events, and repeatedly asking for the same information.

2. Difficulty with Planning and Problem-Solving: Individuals with dementia may struggle with tasks that require planning, organization, and problem-solving. This can affect their ability to manage finances, follow a recipe, or plan a route.

3. Confusion with Time and Place: People with dementia often become disoriented and confused about the time, date, and even their current location. They may lose track of seasons and the passage of time.

4. Changes in Language and Communication: Individuals with dementia may have difficulty finding the right words, following or joining a conversation, and may repeat themselves frequently. They may also have trouble understanding spoken or written information.

5. Personality and Behavioral Changes: Dementia can lead to changes in behavior and personality. This may include increased agitation, aggression, mood swings, social withdrawal, and loss of inhibitions. Some individuals become more apathetic or less motivated.

It's important to note that these signs can be subtle in the early stages of dementia and may be mistakenly attributed to normal aging or stress. Diagnosis typically requires a comprehensive evaluation by a healthcare professional, which may include cognitive tests, medical history assessment, and brain imaging. Additionally, not all dementia is Alzheimer's disease, as there are different types of dementia with distinct characteristics and causes, so an accurate diagnosis is essential for appropriate care and treatment.
