Of my three sisters, I laugh the loudest and that always made dad laugh too. As his Alzheimer’s progressed, finding things to laugh about became more difficult. In the throes of the disease’s progression, I wished I had tools to help bring a bit of happiness to him, especially on those days when he was sad or agitated.

Here’s what I know…creating opportunities for laughter for a family member with Alzheimer's or dementia can be incredibly beneficial for their overall well-being. Plus, you need reasons to laugh as well because this journey is hard and fraught with guilt, self-doubt, and tears.

While each person's preferences and needs are unique, here are 10 activities that can generally promote laughter and joy in your loved one with Alzheimer's or dementia:

1. Reminisce with Photos and Memorabilia: Gather old photos, family albums, and memorabilia to trigger positive memories and conversations. Sharing stories and discussing familiar people and places can bring smiles and laughter.

2. Music Therapy: Play familiar and favorite songs from their past. Music can evoke strong emotions and memories, leading to joyful and positive reactions.

3. Simple Crafts and Art: Engage in simple and creative activities like painting, coloring, or crafting. Focus on the process rather than the end result to encourage a sense of accomplishment and joy.

4. Puzzle Games: Choose puzzles with larger pieces and simple designs. Completing puzzles together can stimulate cognitive function and provide a sense of achievement.

5. Gentle Exercise: Participate in light exercises or stretches, such as seated yoga or chair dancing. Physical activity releases endorphins, promoting happiness and reducing anxiety.

6. Pet Therapy: Interact with gentle and friendly pets, such as therapy dogs or cats. Animals can provide comfort, companionship, and unconditional love, leading to moments of joy.

7. Comedy and Laughter Therapy: Watch lighthearted comedies or show funny videos. Laughter therapy can boost mood, reduce stress, and create moments of shared joy.

8. Cooking and Baking Together: Prepare simple recipes together, focusing on familiar foods. The sensory experience of cooking and the pleasure of sharing a meal can be joyful.

9. Walks or Garden Time: Spend time outdoors in a safe and serene environment. Nature's beauty and fresh air can enhance mood and stimulate positive emotions.

10. Interactive Storytelling: Create or read stories that involve imagination and creativity. Encourage participation and engage in imaginative conversations that spark laughter.

Remember, the key is to tailor activities to the individual's preferences, abilities, and current mood. Pay attention to their cues and adapt activities accordingly. Creating a calm and supportive environment is essential for promoting laughter and joy in individuals with Alzheimer's or dementia; and don’t forget the hugs because they matter most.
